Lugeon Water Test

Introduction

IS-Other | Lugeon Water Test

The Lugeon Water test uses the analysis methods defined in Houlsby (1976) and the calculation is designed to support two different readings methods: Fixed Time and Fixed Volume.

You must first select the method from the Reading_Method field on the Lugeon_Water_Test (upper) table. Once saved, the data entry fields will be automatically coloured to assist you ring the relevant data in the Lugeon_Water_Test (upper) and Lugeon_Water_Test_Readings (lower) tables for the selected Reading_Method.

In order to allow the user to override the calculation for the reported result, the Lugeon_Value needs to be empty for the Lugeon_Value and Hydraulic_Conductivity fields to calculate.

Data Entry Procedure by Fixed Time

The Datgel Advanced In Situ Tool allows you to choose between two options for the reading intervals: 'Fixed Time 1 min' and 'Fixed Time 5 min'.

Fixed Time 1 min - Low volume tests, record volume for fixed 1 min intervals

  1. Enter the DepthBottomTest_NumberBorehole_DiameterPacker_TypePacker_Inflation_PressurePacker_Inflation_Pressure_RemarkFriction_LossesPacker_SealPressure_Gauge_HeightInitial Groundwater_Depth, and the Flow_Type fields in the upper table.
  2. When you change table row or click save (Ctrl+S), the Initial_Groundwater_Depth_bglDepth_bglCentre_bglBottom_bglTest_Length and Correction_Gauge_Pressure fields will also be automatically written to the Lugeon_Water_Test (upper) table.
  3. Enter the Test_PressureFlow_Meter_Reading_StartFlow_Meter_Reading_StartFlow_Meter_Reading_2_min a,Flow_Meter_Reading_3_min, Flow_Meter_Reading_4_min, ...  etc fields in the lower table. You need to populate only the needed fields. Click save or Ctrl+S and the Volume_0-1_min, Volume_1-2_minVolume_2-3_min, ..., Effective_HeadVolume_LossFlow_RateFlow_Rate_Per_MetreLugeon_Value and Hydraulic_Conductivity fields in the lower table and the Average_Lugeon_ValueAverage_Hydraulic_ConductivityLugeon_Value and Hydraulic_Conductivity in the upper table will be automatically calculated.
  4. You may set the Flow_TypeLugeon_Sign and Lugeon_Value in the upper table according your interpretation.
If you need to change the value on Flow_Type, first you need to remove the data stored in Lugeon_Value and Hydraulic_Conductivity before recalculate.

Fixed Time 5 min - Low volume tests, record volume for fixed 5 min intervals

  3. Enter the Test_PressureFlow_Meter_Reading_StartFlow_Meter_Reading_5_minFlow_Meter_Reading_10_min and the Flow_Meter_Reading_15_min fields in the lower table. Click save or Ctrl+S and the Volume_0-5_min, Volume_5-10_minVolume_10-15_minEffective_HeadVolume_LossFlow_RateFlow_Rate_Per_MetreLugeon_Value and Hydraulic_Conductivity fields in the lower table and the Average_Lugeon_ValueAverage_Hydraulic_ConductivityLugeon_Value and Hydraulic_Conductivity in the upper table will be automatically calculated.
  4. You may change the Flow_TypeLugeon_Sign and Lugeon_Value in the upper table according your interpretation.
If you need to change the value on Flow_Type, first you need to remove the data stored in Lugeon_Value and Hydraulic_Conductivity before recalculate.

Data Entry Procedure by Fixed Volume - High volume tests, record time for fixed volume

  1. Enter the DepthBottomTest_NumberBorehole_Diameter, Fixed_VolumePacker_TypePacker_Inflation_PressurePacker_Inflation_Pressure_RemarkFriction_LossesPacker_SealPressure_Gauge_HeightInitial_Groundwater_Depth, and the Flow_Type fields in the upper table.
  2. When you change table, row or click save (Ctrl+S), the Initial_Groundwater_Depth _ bglDepth_bglCentre_bglBottom_bglTest_Length and Correction_Gauge_Pressure fields will also be automatically written to the Lugeon_Water_Test (upper) table.
  3. Enter the Test_PressureElapsed_Time_1Elapsed_Time_2 and the Elapsed_Time_3 fields in the lower table. You may leave 2, or 2 and 3 empty. Each interval is the time for the given Fixed Volume to flow. The average is used to calculate flow rate.
  4. Click save (Ctl+S) and the Effective_HeadVolume_LossFlow_RateFlow_Rate_Per_MetreLugeon_Value and Hydraulic_Conductivity fields in the lower table and the Average_Lugeon_ValueAverage_Hydraulic_ConductivityLugeon_Value and Hydraulic_Conductivity in the upper table will be automatically calculated.
  5. You may change the Flow_TypeLugeon_Sign and Lugeon_Value in the upper table according your interpretation.
If you need to change the value on Flow_Type, first you need to remove the data stored in Lugeon_Value and Hydraulic_Conductivity before recalculate.

Analysis

The calculation of the Lugeon_Value and Hydraulic_Conductivity for the selected Flow_Type is calculated according to Houlsby 1976 interpretation:

  • Laminar Flow: Uses the average of Lugeon Value and the average of the Hydraulic Conductivity.
  • Turbulent Flow: Uses the Lugeon Value for the highest pressure.
  • Dilation: Uses the Lugeon for the lowest (or medium) pressures.
  • Wash-out: Uses the Highest Lugeon Value.
  • Void Filling: Uses the final Lugeon value.
